As Northumberland County is currently experiencing an outbreak of ringworm within its cat population, the Northumberland Humane Society is closed to the public for cat adoptions and intakes for a six-to-eight-week period. This closure will allow us to provide care for the cats and kittens currently in our shelter and to perform deep cleaning of all cat housing areas.  

We will continue to offer dog adoptions and intakes during this time. Our NHS shelter team is available by phone - 905 885 4131 or email info@nothumberlandhs.com for any questions.

What is ringworm?
Ringworm is not a worm at all—it’s a fungal skin infection and is highly contagious to both animals and humans. It’s particularly common in young, malnourished or stressed kittens. While not life-threatening, it requires long-term treatment and strict isolation to prevent transmission.

Ringworm symptoms include:

• Hair loss in circular patches

• Crusty, scaly or reddened skin

• Excessive scratching

• Dull or broken fur

If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet(s), contact your veterinarian immediately as early treatment improves outcomes and reduces the chance of spread.

Shelter Doors May Be Temporarily Closed, But Our Mission Marches On

We kicked off July with wagging tails and big smiles as the NHS team proudly marched in the Port Hope Canada Day Parade!

Thank you to everyone who cheered us on — it was a joy to be part of such a vibrant community celebration, sharing our mission and some adoptable faces along the route.

❤️Big Hearts, Small Hands

Our hearts are bursting with gratitude!

Our hearts are full thanks to the amazing young supporters who’ve stepped up in big ways this summer to help the animals at the Northumberland Humane Society!

Six-year-old Karra warmed our hearts by donating her entire beloved stuffie collection to bring comfort to the animals in our care. Meanwhile, four inspiring young entrepreneurs — Emery & Tate Ferguson and Holton & Delaney Kennedy — set up a homemade lemonade stand and raised an incredible $350 to support the shelter!

And we can’t forget Max, who, alongside his grandma Kathy, rolled up his sleeves to help tidy and replant the front garden beds at our thrift store with beautiful greenery generously donated by Grafton Creekside Golf.

These acts of compassion show that no one is too small to make a big difference. From donations to dirt-covered hands, every effort helps animals in need — and inspires the community around them. 🐾
